Telangana Braces for Extreme Heat: IMD Issues Critical Red Alert as Temperatures Set to Cross 45°C

Author: Luckybrother

HYDERABAD, May 14, 2026 — The India Meteorological Department (IMD) Hyderabad has issued a critical Red Warning for several districts in Telangana as a severe heatwave intensifies across the state. After a brief period of thunderstorms, the mercury is projected to soar, with northern districts expected to witness extreme weather conditions where temperatures could cross the 45°C mark.

According to the latest IMD bulletin issued on Wednesday and updated today, May 14, the heatwave is expected to settle in firmly from May 15 to May 19. While scattered thunderstorms provided a “Powerhouse” but temporary respite in parts of the state yesterday, dry winds from the north are now driving a rapid rise in temperatures.

Red Alert Districts: The Danger Zones

The IMD has identified several districts where the heatwave will be particularly “Powerhouse” and dangerous. Residents in these areas are advised to avoid outdoor exposure during peak hours (12:00 PM to 4:00 PM).

Districts under Red Alert (Starting May 15):

  • Adilabad
  • Nizamabad
  • Nirmal
  • Jagityal
  • Mancherial
  • Komaram Bheem Asifabad

By the weekend (May 16–17), the heatwave is expected to expand into Karimnagar, Peddapalli, and Rajanna Sircilla. In these northern pockets, the maximum temperatures are likely to hover between 44°C and 46°C.

Hyderabad Weather Update

While the northern districts face a Red Alert, the state capital is not far behind. Hyderabad and its surrounding areas, including Rangareddy and Medchal-Malkajgiri, are currently under a Yellow/Orange Alert.

  • Current Stats: On Wednesday, Hyderabad recorded a maximum of 42.4°C at Amberpet.
  • Forecast: Temperatures in the city are expected to remain between 40°C and 42°C over the next 48 hours. However, hazy conditions and high humidity may make the “real-feel” temperature significantly higher.

The “Thunderstorm” Wildcard

Interestingly, the IMD has also forecast isolated thunderstorms and lightning for parts of Bhadradri Kothagudem, Khammam, Mulugu, and Jayashankar Bhupalpally for May 14 and 15. These “Powerhouse” squalls, with winds up to 50 kmph, may offer localized relief but will likely be followed by even sharper temperature spikes as the moisture evaporates.

Lesson to Learn: Identifying Heatstroke Symptoms

With a Red Alert in effect, understanding the “Powerhouse” signs of heat-related illness is life-saving. The Telangana Health Department has activated its Heatwave Action Plan, advising citizens to watch for:

  1. Heat Exhaustion: Heavy sweating, rapid pulse, dizziness, and fatigue.
  2. Heatstroke (Emergency): High body temperature (above 103°F/39.4°C), red/dry skin, no sweating, and confusion.
  3. Prevention: Carry an umbrella, wear light-colored cotton clothes, and consume ORS, buttermilk, or lemon water frequently—even if you don’t feel thirsty.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

1. What does a “Red Alert” for a heatwave mean?

A Red Alert indicates “Extreme Heatwave” conditions. It means the heat is likely to persist for more than two days, posing a very high risk of heatstroke and heat exhaustion for all age groups.

2. How long will this heatwave last?

The IMD suggests the current severe spell will continue at least until May 19, 2026. Relief may only arrive with the advance of the southwest monsoon, which is expected to reach the Andaman Sea around May 16.

3. Which was the hottest place in Telangana yesterday?

Nizamabad recorded the highest temperature in the state on May 13, reaching 45.5°C.

4. Are schools closed due to the heatwave?

Most schools in Telangana have already shifted to half-day timings or commenced summer vacations. Parents are advised to keep children indoors as the mercury crosses the 44°C mark.

Final Thoughts: Stay Hydrated, Stay Safe

As Telangana enters this “Powerhouse” phase of the summer, the importance of community care cannot be overstated. Ensure that water is kept out for birds and stray animals, and check on elderly neighbors who may be vulnerable to the rising heat.
