Hyderabad is preparing for the return of its centuries-old Fish Prasadam distribution, with the annual event set to begin at the Nampally Exhibition Grounds on June 8 during the auspicious Mrigasira Karthi period. Authorities expect lakhs of visitors and asthma patients from Telangana, across India, and abroad to attend the event.

The event, organised by the Bathini family, is one of Hyderabad’s most well-known traditional gatherings and is believed by many attendees to help provide relief from respiratory ailments such as asthma and chronic breathing problems. However, medical experts and scientific groups have questioned its efficacy over the years, making it both a cultural and debated health tradition.

What Is Fish Prasadam?

Fish Prasadam is a traditional practice that dates back to the mid-1800s, where a small live murrel fish (Korameenu) is administered with a secret herbal paste prepared by the Bathini family.

The family claims the herbal formulation has been passed down through generations and is distributed free of cost every year during Mrigasira Karthi, which marks the beginning of monsoon according to the Telugu calendar. Vegetarian attendees are reportedly offered a jaggery-based alternative instead of fish.

When Will Distribution Start?

Officials confirmed that the distribution programme will begin on the night of June 8, with formal inauguration expected around 9 PM, and continue through June 9 to manage heavy crowds. Earlier reports suggested the programme would run for nearly 24 hours.

The venue will be:

Nampally Exhibition Grounds

Authorities expect huge crowds, with lakhs likely to visit over the two-day period.

Massive Preparations Underway

The Telangana government and Hyderabad civic authorities have launched extensive arrangements for crowd management and public safety.

Departments involved include:

  • GHMC
  • Police
  • Revenue Department
  • Electricity Department
  • Water Board
  • Fisheries Department.

According to officials, preparations include:

  • Barricaded queue lines
  • Drinking water tankers and sachets
  • Ambulances and medical teams
  • Sanitation staff deployment
  • Mobile transformers for uninterrupted power supply
  • Traffic control and parking systems.

Over 1.2 Lakh Fish Ready

The Fisheries Department has arranged around 1.20 lakh Murrel (Korameenu) fish seedlings, measuring roughly 2.5–3 inches, for the event.

Officials have also set up:

  • 16 token counters
  • 35 fish distribution counters

to reduce crowd congestion and speed up the process.

Special RTC Buses for Visitors

To help attendees travel easily, TGSRTC will reportedly operate 124 special buses from key locations across Hyderabad, including:

  • Secunderabad Railway Station
  • Kacheguda Railway Station
  • MGBS
  • Jubilee Bus Station (JBS)
  • Shamshabad Airport
  • Dilsukhnagar
  • Uppal
  • Gachibowli.

Transport officials said additional buses may be added depending on crowd demand.

A Tradition That Also Draws Debate

While thousands continue to attend every year out of faith and belief, health experts and rationalist groups have questioned scientific evidence behind the remedy.

The Indian Medical Association and other organisations have in the past raised concerns regarding medical effectiveness and safety, while supporters continue to defend it as a long-standing traditional practice.
